The Taste of Malaysia ‘What Malaysia Looks like’ [味!马来SEE亚 2.0 ]
Dynamic Thinking in Embracing Local Sources for Spatial Explorations.
culture
/ˈkʌltʃə/
noun
-
the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively.
-
the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or society.
Culture can be defined intangibly & tangibly;
Intangibly by intellectual achievement over the timeline, and tangibly by the ideas, behaviour, and customs curated by particular people or society. The changes of intellectual thinking across the timeline has led critical thinkers to actively discuss the local identity and impact of designs towards the local climate & context. The opinions from each individuals towards ‘designing the environment' led to a rapid paradigm shift in the field of architecture. Active conversations discusses ‘locality’ through materials, building form, social integration, and even the considerations of context sustainability.
One of the scene that strongly captures the sense of Malaysian culture (by tangible and intangible means) is how designers appreciate the culture of using bamboo as local material to build habitable spaces, and further innovate the usage of bamboo, expanding it’s potential of flexibility, aesthetic and strength to resolve technical and environmental issues.
As we emerging to the 22nd century, this is the crucial period where Malaysia seeks for its own identity as par with the developments ongoing. Cultural sense of Malaysia is not defined by static motion of a scene or a particular object, but the constant pacing of Malaysian mentality embracing local techniques and sources to create the identity of ‘Malaysia’ through different functionality of spaces. There’s never a fullstop in picturing Malaysia’s sense of culture.
